Mail lets you have multiple email address accounts, so you can send and receive email from all of your accounts like iCloud, Gmail and Yahoo!
If you have multiple email addresses set up in Mail, you will see a From: drop down menu in the Compose Message window showing all of your email addresses.
Here's how to set the default send email address you want to use for new messages.
- Go to Mail's preferences.
- Go to the Composing view.
- Under Addressing:, select the email address you want to use as the default for sending.
When you compose a new message, the default address you selected will show in the From drop down. You can always choose another send from address by choosing it from the drop down.
On a related note, the From: drop down also appears when you are replying to a message. The address shown is the email address the original message was sent to. (makes sense) I haven't needed to do it very often, but you can change the From address on a reply message. When I have done it, it has usually been because someone sent a message to my main email address and I prefer to move the conversation to one of the email addresses that I use for specific projects.
