Using Safari Extensions

One of the reasons that people like Firefox so much is its ability to add extensions. The latest version of Safari (5.0.1, available through Software Update) introduces the Safari Extensions Gallery.

Once you have upgraded to 5.0.1, you will see a menu item Safari Extensions Gallery under Safari in the MenuBar. Select the gallery and you are taken to a page on Apple's website where you can browse the available extensions.

The Gallery has only been open a few days. so at the moment the selection is pretty small, but I would expect the list to grow quickly.

Here are a couple of extensions that caught my eye:

  • Add to Amazon Wish List. If you use Amazon often you are probably used to the Wish List where you can add Amazon items that you want and then share that Wish list with people. With the Add to Amazon Wish List extension, an Amazon button appears on your Safari toolbar. Go to any shopping site, look up an item and click the Amazon button. The item is added to your Amazon Wish List. It does seem a little odd to have items from other stores on your Amazon list, but it does make it convenient for you to only share just one list.
  • No ads with AdBlock <br>Click to see a larger image

AdBlock. Just like it says, AdBlock removes the ads from the web pages you visit. This is good for you, the visitor, because you get a cleaner, less distracting page. It isn't so good for the operators of the web site who depend on income generated by the ads.
  • Bing Highlights. Select any text on a web page and a small magnifying glass will pop up. Click it and Bing will open a small window that offers search items for the selected text. For example, if you highlight an address, Bing will pop up a map of that address. Bing will also translate the text, give flight updates and more.
