Finding Camera RAW Compatibility

Ensure compatibility
The gift giving season approaches and I'll bet many lists will have a digital camera on them. Most point-and-shoot cameras store their images as .jpeg files while higher-end cameras offer RAW format as well. RAW offers a much higher quality photo than .jpeg.

Whereas .jpeg files are universal and you can be sure than any digital camera will work with the Mac, RAW format is more specialized. Image editing software must be tuned to each camera model individually,

Apple maintains a list of supported cameras for iPhoto and Aperture, You can find that list here

Adobe maintains a list of supported for their image editing applications (Photoshop, Lightroom, Photoshop Elements). You can find that list here.

Both lists are regularly updated as new camera models are released. Updates to the images editing software should be automatic.

If you are considering the purchase of a digital camera that shoots RAW, you should consult these lists first to make sure the camera you buy will be compatible with the editing software you plan to use.
