Zooming the Entire Screen
Get a close up of your screen
Sometimes there is text on the screen that is a little too small to read. Or maybe you would like to get a close up of a photo on the screen. You can zoom in the screen to make everything larger.

How you do this depends on what hardware you have:

  • With a Mighty Mouse (ships with all desktop Macs) or a track wheel on your non-Apple mouse, hold down the control (ctrl) key and roll the wheel or ball to zoom in and out.
  • With a notebook Mac, hold down the control (ctrl) key and two-finger scroll up and down to zoom in and out.
PS: Don't confuse this zoom with the zoom (aka Maximize) from this hint that you get by clicking the green zoom button on the left side of the title bar. The green-button-zoom expands your window to best size for the screen. There is also a zoom in Safari and Mail the makes the text easier to read. The zoom in this tip actually makes everything on the screen bigger and easier to see.

Doesn't work anymore in Lion. Now you have to 'enable' it, then hit an awkward combination of Command+Option+= and - to change the zoom. Bad move, Apple!

Zoom is still there in Lion. You may have to turn it on again, I'm not sure. To do that, go to the Universal Access System Preferences panel and the Seeing view.

control + scroll (one finger Magic Mouse, 2 finger trackpad) activates the zoom.

Lion also has an option to Zoom in window. If this box is checked, the entire screen doesn't zoom but instead a rectangular zoom window opens that you can zoom and out and move around the screen.
