Safari 6: Working with Tabs

What were they thinking?
The latest version of Safari, Safari 6, was released as part of Mountain Lion. While many of the new features are for Mountain Lion only, Safari 6 is also available for Macs running Lion.

Safari 6 changes the way tabs display and it is a train wreck.

Instead of tabs being about 2" wide and then adding tabs of the same size to the right as you open them, now the first tab is 100% the width of the window. Add a tab and they are split 50/50 across the window. As you continue to add tabs, they get smaller and smaller.

This new way of handling tabs is horrible. The + icon to add a new tab is alway at the far right. Huge tabs just don't make any kind of sense to me. Complaints about this new feature are everywhere online. I'm guessing that Apple will change their mind soon and at least give the option to restore tabs to their previous behavior.

In the meantime, I've been simulating the old behavior by immediately opening five or six new empty tabs as soon as I open a new Safari window.

As soon as Apple decides to change this silly tab behavior or if someone else finds a better work around, I'll let you know.
