Upgrading to Mountain Lion

Getting and installing Mountain Lion is a piece of cake. You don't need to leave your house to get it and there is only one very simple question you need to answer before installing.

Back in the days of Leopard and Snow Leopard was so complicated that people wrote entire books on just the install process.

Not any more.

You don't get Mountain Lion on a DVD– you download it from the Mac App Store.

Here's how to get Mountain Lion:

  1. Go to the Mac App Store from the Apple Menu.
  2. A link to Mountain Lion is right on the front page. It is only $20. Buy it.
  3. Download. It took just under an hour for mine to download.
How to install Mountain Lion:
  1. Open Install Mountain Lion.app from the applications folder or Launch Pad.
  2. The only decision to make is which hard drive to install Mountain Lion to. You are probably going to install to your internal hard drive and that is the only option shown. If not, click Show All Disks.
  3. Sit back and wait. My wait was about 15 minutes.
When the install is complete, your Mac will show a screen asking for your Apple ID. Your Apple ID is the user name you use for buying content on the iTunes Store and the Mac App Store. If you don't have and Apple ID, you can create one there. If you don't want to enter your Apple ID, just click Skip.

All done!

Do you have more than one Mac? You buy Mountain Lion once and can install it on every Mac you own without repurchasing. Here are some instructions on how to install Mountain Lion on multiple Macs without downloading it to each Mac.
