Facebook obviously isn't a Mac-only topic, but with so many people using it, I feel that it is important to discuss some of the recent privacy and security issues with using Facebook that many people don't know about.
According to a recent recent report from Consumer Reports, about half of Facebook users have posted personal information that they might prefer not be shared. About a quarter of users are either unaware of security and privacy options or just choose to ignore them.
Tidbits, one of the leading sources of Mac news, had published a comprehensive article on Facebook privacy and security issues.
Here are some of the highlights of the article:
Facebook has often changed its privacy policy without giving adequate notice to users resulting in information becoming public that was previously kept private.
Privacy controls can be difficult to understand due to their complexity.
There are some situations where your personal information is shared and you cannot prevent it.
Any information, photos, etc that you post online (anywhere, not just Facebook) is out there forever. Some things may come back to haunt you later in life.
This Tidbits article is an important read whether you are a casual or hard-core Facebook user.
