If you are the only user of your Mac, you can set it to automatically log in to your user account on startup. This can be handy because it bypasses the Log In window and speeds up the startup process.

The down side to automatic login is that no password is required to access your user account. This of course means that anyone can access the data in your account.

To set your Mac to automatically log in to one user account:

  1. Go to System Preferences from the Dock or the Apple Menu.
  2. Go to the Accounts area.
  3. Click on the padlock on the lower left to authenticate. An Administrator's user name and password are required.
  4. Click on Login Options.
  5. Choose your account name from the Automatic Login dropdown. You will be prompted the password to your account.
Let me state again that while automatic login is faster and more convenient, it is also a security risk because no password is required to access the files in your account. Personally, I prefer to leave automatic login turned off.

If you have multiple users on your Mac with multiple user accounts, consider turning on Fast User Switching to quickly switch between the accounts.
