If you use Yahoo! Mail or Gmail, you probably have contacts stored with your email on those systems. You can sync those contacts to your Mac's Address Book for offline access. Or you might keep your contacts in Address Book and want to make them available to you online from any computer.
Setting up Address Book sync with Yahoo! Mail or Gmail happens in Address Book Preferences. Before you set up syncing, however, make a backup of your Address Book data (File / Export / Address Book archive).
Go to Address Book Preferences and choose the Accounts tab (General tab in Leopard). Choose the checkbox for Synchronize with Yahoo! or Synchronize with Google and click the Configure… button. You will be prompted for your user name and password. Once configured, contacts will be synced hourly (for Snow Leopard. For Leopard syncing with Yahoo! and Google occurs when the the iPhone/touch/iPad syncs.)
Although you can set up Groups in Address Book, Yahoo! Mail and Gmail, groups are not synced.
IMPORTANT: Only set up Address Book syncing from one Mac to one Yahoo! Mail or Gmail account. If you try to sync multiple Macs with the same online mail account, you risk sync errors and data loss.
